Parakiore is a landmark civic investment for Ōtautahi Christchurch and the final development within the Crown led Anchor Projects programme - one of the most significant urban regeneration initiatives in Aotearoa New Zealand. As the country’s largest aquatic and indoor sport facilities with an expected two million visitors annually, it has been designed to elevate community wellbeing, support high performance sport, and strengthen the central city as an active connected urban precinct.
Occupying a prominent 6 hectare site, the 32,000m² complex unifies elite training environments, community sport facilities, aquatics, movement studios, wellness spaces, and large scale event capability within a single integrated architectural vision. The guiding principle of 'Sport on Display' shapes the user experience, making movement and performance visible throughout to promote intuitive wayfinding and celebrate sport as an everyday cultural expression.
Through disciplined collaboration, dedication, problem solving, and resilience, the project team successfully delivered one of New Zealand’s most complex public facilities - an enduring civic asset designed to enrich the social fabric of Ōtautahi Christchurch for generations.
Throughout the project's development, our team conducted a series of stakeholder engagement sessions involving both national and local teams. This included key user groups such as Ōtākaro, Aquatic Sensory Environment, sports organisation tenants, High Performance Sport NZ, Circo Arts, Gymnastics, Café operators, Netball, Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Water Polo, Diving, Swimming Club, City Council Operations, Fitness Centre operators, and Sky TV.
We listened to and strategically prioritised their requirements, ensuring that we integrated considerations around space planning, FF&E, leasing arrangements, and programming - each factor directly impacting the functionality and operation of the facility. We separated the high-performance areas from public spaces while maintaining essential integration with key areas, such as an assessment running track, supporting infrastructure including physios, technical analysts, and strategists.
Parakiore is designed as an inclusive, transformative community asset. Its accessibility, scale, and breadth of activities remove barriers to participation and enable engagement across all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. By interweaving elite sport with everyday recreation, the centre fosters aspiration, belonging, and shared experience, where tamariki, families, local clubs, and professional athletes use the same vibrant spaces. The facility also reinforces central Christchurch as a destination, drawing daily activity, supporting surrounding businesses, and hosting local, national, and international competitions that contribute to cultural vibrancy and economic regeneration.
The name Parikiore was gifted to the facility by local rūnanga Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri, paying homage to the youngest son of Ngāi Tahu chief Tūrākautahi - renowned for his amazing running speed and athleticism. His physical and mental attributes are an example of the aspirations for this facility – exemplifying health, sporting excellence, and wellbeing.
