Lincoln University is a world-renowned agricommerce university on the outskirts of Christchurch. The Joint Facility project was a unique collaborative concept between Lincoln University and agricultural Crown Research Institute AgResearch designed to generate ideas, income and innovation for New Zealand’s primary industries.
The concept proposed bringing together under one roof a broad range of industry and research organisations, all dedicated to advancing land-based productivity and sustainability science.
We had worked extensively with Crown Research Institutes, Iwi (Indigenous groups), agribusiness and other stakeholders on the facility’s masterplan. From this consultation emerged the central goal and guiding principle of the building project: breaking barriers to progress.
World-leading scientific hub
With scientists, students and private sector businesses working together in one collaborative hub, the Joint Facility was to be a global centre for education and discovery in agricultural science, technology, and practice.
Bringing together tertiary education and Crown institutes into one future-focused hub of agricultural science is visionary. Grounding architecture in the local, while assimilating cultural values and identity, resulted in a richer and more meaningful vision.
