The central design idea - Urban Collage - expresses Atlassian Melbourne’s purpose and vision with a distinct local identity, aligning with Atlassian workplaces globally while reflecting Melbourne’s culture and context.
The design is underpinned by a behaviour-, function- and experience-led approach. Principles of Function First, Intentional Moments and Curated Intervention guided planning, storytelling elements and strategic use of budget, prioritising sustainability through reuse of the existing fit-out, furniture and fittings.
Through a collaborative partnership between WAM and Greenaway Architects, a strong First Nations voice is woven throughout - thoughtfully integrated and expressed in unexpected ways. From the carved timber Atlassian logo at reception by Iluka Sax-Williams to integrated works by Indigenous artists and collaborators Tommy Day III, Edwina Green, Justine McAllister, Jefa Greenaway FRAIA MDIA, Tarsha Davies, Willie Weston, Jean Ngwarraye Long, Lee-Anne Williams and Kathleen Korda, the space reflects both Atlassian’s identity and its place on Naarm.
We set out to reflect Atlassian’s commitment to Melbourne by designing a magnetic, flexible and frictionless space that enables Atlassians to do their best work. We’ve created a place that allows teams and individuals to customise their day – from facilitating connection and collaboration, to supporting quiet, focused work. It’s about understanding that no two days are necessarily the same.
The design demonstrates how embracing reuse, seeking to dematerialise a project and prioritising carbon reduction can result in a quality outcome, both in function and the experience of the space. It seeks to help shift the dial on expectations of how design projects are approached and demonstrates a responsible use of resources.
Over 70% of furniture was reused, and most of the existing built environment was retained. The project achieved a reduction of -76% embodied carbon - equivalent to 835 trips from Sydney to Melbourne by car.
Atlassian’s partnership with Warren and Mahoney on our first permanent Melbourne home has been exceptionally collaborative. We’re proud to have created a space that reflects our team’s work styles and values, all underpinned by the contributions of First Nations designers and artists, adding a meaningful connection to Country
