Located in Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter Innovation Precinct, Te Paeroa o te Kawau forms a critical part of Beca’s wider transformation programme aimed at enhancing how their people experience and enjoy their work. The location strengthens connections with clients, partners, and the wider design and engineering community, positioning Beca at the front of future-focused workplace innovation.
This is how we should be designing for the future. A playful nod to engineering that will attract talent and clients. Wonderful storytelling connecting the project to place. A masterclass in how a brand can be represented in a 3D world.
This transformative 14,000sqm workplace spans three interconnected buildings, linked by internal bridges that promote collaboration, visibility, and connection.
At the heart of the concept lies ‘The Moment Generator’ - a metaphor for the everyday problem-solving and spontaneous interactions that define Beca’s impact. It reflects the company’s scale, pragmatism, and efficiency, while celebrating the charisma and creativity of its people - the eccentricity of engineering brought to life in space.
Designed to unite teams as ‘One Beca’, the HQ enables true agility. Featuring flexible work settings, generous gathering spaces, and carefully designed incidental connection points, the space empowers teams to work creatively and collaboratively. Central to this are three sculptural staircases - New Zealand’s first to combine CLT, glulam, and LVL - co-designed with Beca to promote movement and cross-team engagement across floors.
The two-storey ‘Heart Space’ and client areas are strategically placed at the front of the building, capturing views of Auckland’s skyline and Viaduct marina, embedding the energy of Auckland city into the everyday experience.
Warren and Mahoney’s design for Beca’s Auckland headquarters turns the mechanics of engineering into poetry, rethinking how workplace design can reveal its own systems.
Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei has been involved in this project since its earliest stages. Together, a cultural narrative was developed that connects us to the location and is reflected throughout the design. At a ceremonial blessing, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei gifted Beca a name for the workplace. The name has three parts:
Te Paeroa Taumatua The Legacy of Leadership
Te Paeroa Kaiata The Long Horizon of Opportunity
Te Paeroa o te Kawau The Shoreline of the Kawau
The name references Beca’s legacy of leadership and contributions to Tāmaki Makaurau; its continual pursuit of innovation and improvement; and the building’s location. It is the third line, Te Paeroa o te Kawau, by which our workplace will be widely known. The name acknowledges that the site was once part of Te Waitematā and was frequented by the kawau (the cormorant or shag), which features prominently in tribal stories of the area.
Sustainability is integral. The fitout aligns with Beca’s decarbonisation goals, targeting Platinum WELL Certification, a 6 Green Star rating, and 5-Star NABERSNZ energy rating - a testament to the project’s commitment to environmental performance and health and wellbeing.
