Safe, independent, and private
Nestled around a landscaped courtyard, the individual units are sited to balance independence and privacy. A strong geometric street edge contributes to the character of the development and creates a sense of safety through community surveillance. The building form references the simple gable roofs of the original units, which are adapted to meet the internal planning requirements to have more rooms facing the courtyard.
These units have been configured so that they are offset from each other to ensure a level of seclusion and privacy, yet through the design, we prioritised natural interaction between residents. The centre courtyard model makes it easy for residents to walk to one another’s houses and allows opportunity for mingling as they make their way through the grounds to the community centre.
Universal design
Natural day lighting, a calm interior palette, and a comfortable thermal environment, were drivers in creating welcoming, light-filled spaces, offering an aspirational and ergonomic living environment for people of all ages and life stages.
This extension has been integrated sympathetically into an existing community providing housing for elderly residents. An impressive generosity, and deep respect for the needs of residents, characterise this successful exercise in community building.
