The Royal Edward Victualling Yard (REVY) is a heritage-listed former naval ship-provisioning site in Sydney. Google bought two of the historic brick warehouses and commissioned their adaptive reuse, along with the design and construction of a new building to create a centralised new home for Googlers in Sydney. Warren and Mahoney won the design competition with a considered strategy that links past, present and future and integrates the existing campus with the new.
The distinctive sculptural and fluid form draws a strong contrast with the rigid, orthogonal and static presence of the brick heritage facades. Our team sculpted the floorplate corners and pulled the floorplates away from the REVY to enhance the contrast and expose the relationship between the two parts.
The project took shape in a highly complex consultative environment, with many global stakeholder layers and hierarchies to navigate. By listening thoughtfully and building trust, we were able to translate Google’s aspirations into a place with its own authentic atmosphere that can stretch and grow with Google's people. The project will expand Google’s campus at Pyrmont, which is currently spread across three other sites.
