Constraint as Catalyst
The scale and complexity of the aquatic environment demanded a structural system capable of creating large, column-free spans while responding sensitively to the surrounding Park Lands. These constraints became drivers for a highly coordinated approach to material selection, manufacture, transport and assembly, bringing design and construction thinking together from the outset.
Material Intelligence
Timber was selected as a primary structural material, combining glulam and cross-laminated timber to create the large-span structure while contributing to the project's sustainability ambitions. The engineered timber system comprises approximately 324 m³ of glulam and 108 m³ of CLT, demonstrating how material selection can respond simultaneously to structural performance, architectural expression and environmental objectives.
Prefabricated Structural Systems
The project's major timber components were engineered and manufactured off-site before being transported to Adelaide for assembly. More than 50 timber beams and columns form part of the centre's framework, with major glulam beams extending up to approximately 37 metres. This approach demonstrates how advanced manufacturing can deliver structural elements at a scale and level of precision that would be difficult to achieve through conventional site-based construction.
Design for Manufacture + Assembly
The project required close coordination between engineering, digital design, manufacturing, transport and site assembly. Large-scale timber elements were manufactured internationally and transported specifically for the project, making logistics an integral part of design decision-making rather than something considered after documentation was complete.
Performance at Scale
Adelaide Aquatic Centre demonstrates that MMC can be relevant well beyond residential and repetitive building typologies. Here, advanced timber manufacturing and prefabrication enable the delivery of a complex civic, sports and leisure facility, showing how material intelligence and manufacturing precision can support architectural ambition at significant scale.
