Wanaka Recreation Centre shortlisted in Asia Pacific Design Awards

Celebrating the most progressive architecture and design in the Indo-Pacific region, this year’s InDesign Awards saw a record number of entries. More than 430 projects were entered this year, up 43 percent (year-on-year, 2017-2019) from 14 countries, including Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong, China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan, Japan and Malaysia.

Juror Joyce Wang of Joyce Wang Studio (Hong Kong/UK) said this year’s entries confirmed the Indo-Pacific as “definitely the strongest of all design regions and proudly so”.

Indesign Media Asia Pacific CEO and Juror, Raj Nandan, commented on the dynamic and progressive nature of entries and the INDE.Awards’ ability to celebrate design as a product of its region and local context.

“The 2019 Official Shortlist is a great reflection of the bold, visionary and innovative architecture and design, for which our region is known,” said Mr Nandan.

Now in its third year, the INDE.Awards celebrates the diversity and dynamism of the Indo-Pacific, bringing together creatives from all fields and corners of the region to shine a spotlight on the most progressive buildings, spaces, objects and people.

Thunes Cloete, QLDC general manager community services, welcomed recognition by the awards jury as a reflection of the Council’s commitment to providing high-quality, fit-for-purpose community facilities.

“Sport and recreation hubs like Wanaka Recreation Centre play a key role in strengthening social connections across the district and improving the wellbeing of our community. Good design ensures that these facilities provide a welcoming, inclusive space that incorporates the latest architectural thinking in tune with the local environment,” said Dr Cloete.

“This latest recognition is a testament to all our project partners, especially architects Warren and Mahoney for designing a multi-use centre that creates a sense of belonging and encourages participation, and also to the Upper Clutha community who visit in increasing numbers to swim, keep active and enjoy the space.”

Wanaka Recreation Centre opened in July 2016 with a two-court indoor stadium, outdoor turf, changing rooms, meeting/admin rooms and reception area. The adjoining three-pool aquatic facility was completed in June last year.

A modular approach to the building’s design provides opportunities to extend the facility as demand grows. Public engagement on a joint masterplan for both Wanaka Recreation Centre and Queenstown Events Centre will take place later this year enabling local clubs, groups and the wider community to help shape the future development of council-managed sport and recreation facilities in the district.

“A notable shift towards the wellness trend in New Zealand has resulted in a need for multi-use sports and recreation spaces”, says Warren and Mahoney Principal Daryl Maguire.

“Appealing to this community call, the Wanaka Recreation Centre creates a sense of belonging and encourages participation from all community members with a combination of sports courts and aquatic space under one roof. The resulting design is a calming and inviting environment encompassing all elements of wellness and healthy lifestyle.
