Given the global status of the World Architecture Festival, the outstanding calibre of award submissions and the high volume of competing entries in the Higher Education and Research category, Waimarie can lay claim to the title of ‘best education building worldwide in 2024’.
Designed by Warren and Mahoney in association with Lab-Works Architecture, this recognition celebrates a project that not only addresses the pressing challenges of our time - but also transforms the way we think about the relationship between education, research, and the environment.
"Winning the Education Category at WAF is recognition of not only the design excellence of the facility but also of its deeper purpose," says WAM Project Principal Joseph Hampton. "It's a beacon for future generations of students and researchers, inspiring them to engage with the urgent environmental issues and to develop innovative, sustainable solutions. As Lincoln University continues its mission to provide world-class education, Waimarie stands as a reminder of the critical role that architecture plays in shaping the future of education and research."
"This award is a significant milestone for Warren and Mahoney and a testament to our commitment to world-leading innovation, sustainability, and design excellence, says Blair Johnston, WAM Head of Design. “We're incredibly proud of the collaborative approach that has made Waimarie a reality. To see this vision celebrated at the World Architecture Festival is both humbling and inspiring."
The World Architecture Festival Award is the latest in an array of national and international awards won by Waimarie in 2024, including Building Nations (Excellence in Innovation), INDE Awards Asia Pacific (Best Learning Space) and NZ Commercial Project Awards (National Category winner – Education).
A defining characteristic of Waimarie is its commitment to sustainability. The design team embraced the 'lean and green' philosophy, prioritising energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and resource-conscious materials. The building is a testament to the possibilities of sustainable architecture, with a focus on reducing environmental impact while creating spaces that foster creativity, collaboration, and innovation.
Waimarie is more than just a place for learning; it is a dynamic environment for collaboration between researchers, students, industry leaders, and policymakers. The facility is designed to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue and the exchange of ideas, creating a space where solutions to the world’s most pressing environmental and agricultural challenges can be developed and tested.
At the heart of Waimarie is its capacity to bring together diverse perspectives, fostering partnerships across sectors that span academia, industry, and government. The facility’s design promotes interaction and collaboration, with flexible spaces that can adapt to the evolving needs of the university and its partners.
