Presbyterian Ladies’ College unveils the Joan Montgomery Centre

March 21, 2025
Presbyterian Ladies’ College (PLC) Melbourne has proudly unveiled the Joan Montgomery Centre - a cutting-edge sports, aquatic, and fitness facility designed by Warren and Mahoney (WAM) to serve as a transformational project for the school.

Named in honour of dedicated former Principal Joan Montgomery AM OBE, the centre features a 50 metre heated pool, a learn to swim pool, a fully equipped gym and multi-purpose sports courts. It also includes a dance and movement space, and dedicated fitness area, all designed to enhance the physical education experience.

The design focuses on creating a seamless connection between the campus and the new centre. Well-placed entrances, open sightlines, and welcoming pathways inspire curiosity and invite exploration. The design equally respects privacy, with distinct ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ areas that ensure users of the sports hall are visually separated from the swimming areas, yet still maintain an integrated feel.

“We designed this facility as a real-world learning space and a key element of PLC’s masterplan and the student experience,” says WAM Project Principal Daryl Maguire.

“The design and amenity deliberately seeks to engage the broadest possible cohort into the facility and programmes. From energy-efficient systems to a carefully considered layout that maximises natural light, the design prioritises sustainability and functionality to meet the school’s aspirations for long-term environmental responsibility.”

Cheryl Penberthy, Principal of Presbyterian Ladies’ College, spoke of the centre’s significance:

“The Joan Montgomery Centre represents a bold step forward in our commitment to the holistic development of our students. This facility does more than just provide purpose-built sports amenities – it embodies our vision for supporting young women in their personal growth, overall health and wellbeing, academic achievements, and leadership potential.

“Our partnership with Warren and Mahoney reflects world-class architectural and sustainable design. We are excited to see this innovative space become a vital part of our school’s future.”
