This conversation goes far beyond bricks and mortar. It’s about how thoughtful, community-focused design can drive wellbeing, boost productivity, and generate genuine economic return. With every $1 invested in sports and recreation facilities delivering up to $3.70 in measurable benefits, the equation becomes clear: great design isn’t just good for people — it’s good for the economy.

“In 2025 and beyond, people are becoming increasingly sedentary and reclusive — we shop from our devices instead of heading to the mall, we binge watch Netflix instead of catching a movie with friends. And that shift is having a real impact on our economic growth. If we want to supercharge our communities, we need to supercharge our people — and that means creating real reasons for them to connect and engage,” says Matt Body.

An example of what’s possible is the Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre (NARC), designed by WAM. With an initial forecast of 3,000 members in its first year, the facility hit that target within just three months - a result credited to its quality design, welcoming atmosphere, and strong connection to the outdoors. Now, 18 months on, nearly two million people have walked through its doors - demonstrating that it's not just a facility, it’s a thriving community hub.

"To truly measure the impact of our investment, we need to be clear on the strategy - how we structure the investment, and how we measure success," says Matt.

As co-lead of WAM's Sport and Recreation sector and Director of the International Association of Sports and Leisure Facilities – Australasia, Matt brings deep expertise and fresh perspective to the table. Watch Dialogue Ep04 here to explore how we can reframe the way we plan, fund, and design our spaces - and unlock the full potential for our communities.
